Why Stick & Rudder?

The Stick & Rudder club offers its members some AMAZING benefits, which have helped make it the premier flying club in the mid-west. Here are just a few considerations:

  • Start with the PERFECT LOCATION!
Waukegan Airport is the perfect environment in which to do your flight training. The airport has a control tower. This builds the the skills and confidence needed to communicate with air traffic control.  But the airport is not so busy that you spend a lot of wasted time and money on the taxiways. The practice area is only minutes from the airport making each training lesson very cost effective. Many small non-controlled airports are close by.  This proximity helps complete the flying environment by developing non-towered airport operations and skills.
  • BEST Insurance Around!
We maintain the best insurance policy of any club or FBO in the area. Stick and Rudder Flying Club members are all named insureds on our $1 million liability insurance policy with no sub-limits.

Be careful when researching this at other clubs and FBOs. They are insured for their aircraft, but chances are you are not insured in their aircraft. To protect yourself financially, you will need renter's insurance http://www.aopaia.com/ . This will cost approximately $1,200 to $1,700 a year to cover the hull value of the aircraft you fly. If you fly 50 hours a year, it would add $30 an hour to your flying rate. This extra coverage is not required at Stick and Rudder.
  • Absolute Lowest Cost Around!
We are a not for profit club. We strive to keep dues and flying rates low as compared to for-profit clubs and FBOs. Do your research, you will find our flying and instructor rates are the best in our market area.  You'll save thousands a year!
  • Premier Instruction!
Our instructors are the best of the best. You will not find a staff of flight instructors with more experience or expertise at any other flying club or FBO in the area; in fact, one of our instructors has over 24,000 hours. Our instructors at Stick and Rudder instruct because they love flying and instructing; they are not young college students with little flying experience here to build flying time toward a career in aviation. As you shop around at other training facilities, be sure to check out the experience and background of their instructors.
  • Top Safety Operations!
Safety is Number One! Our airplanes are maintained by our own FAA certified Airframe and Powerplant mechanic in our own facility. We comply with all ADs, do 100-hour inspections, and comply with all optional FAA service bulletins. Part time line personal are on staff to do pre-heating, de-icing, and to assist members with other chores.
  • Comfortable Private Facility
The Stick and Rudder club members built and own our club house and hangar facility; a professional yet friendly place to train or just hang around with friends or quests and swap flying stories. The lighted dedicated ramp space outside our hanger is for the exclusive use of our aircraft. The clubhouse and hanger have been host to many flying and non-flying club events; (holiday parties, flying trips, bus trips, picnics etc).  WiFi equipped.
  • Friendly Community
Come hang out with the members.  Talk flying, share some food, take a trip, take it all in.  There are folks of all backgrounds with a variety of experiences.  Pilots are smart fun people so join the fun.
  • Big Savings on Fuel and Supplies
No need to taxi to get your fuel or wait for the fuel truck to pull up to your plane, we have our own state of the art 10,000 gallon fuel tank that permits bulk fuel purchases at reduced cost. This saving on fuel cost helps keep our flying rates low. Pilot supplies also offered at discounted rates
